Baked Tacos Recipe

After the post/pic of our delicious baked tacos got so much attention on Facebook, I decided to share the recipe. It is just so simple and delicious, sharing this delight is the Christian thing to do right? 🙂

Okay, lets start off with the taco shells! After making them this way, I don’t think we will ever go back to purchasing taco shells. I couldn’t believe how simple this was! All you need is some tortillas and cooking spray. We used some small, soft “taco” tortillas. We used the flour kind but corn is fine too.

First you want to steam them… Wet some paper towels and wring them out well. Layer the tortillas with the wet paper towels on a plate and then microwave (we did 6 at a time). Keep an eye on them, it should be about 30 seconds until they are steamed. Then lightly spray each side with cooking spray and drape each tortilla over two bars of the oven rack. It is wise to put a baking sheet below them to catch any oil from the cooking spray. Bake at 350-375 degrees for 7-10 minutes. You will be able to tell that they are browning & getting crispy. Take them out and set them aside!

Okay, now for the filling 🙂 All you need is ground been (2 pounds), 1 can of refried beans, 1 can of tomato sauce, 1 packet of taco seasoning, shredded cheese, & your favorite taco toppings.

Brown the ground beef in a large skillet. COMPLETELY drain all grease and return to skillet. Over low heat, add refried beans, taco seasoning, and about half to two-thirds of the tomato sauce (you can eye this to see whats best, you don’t want the filling to be too runny or your tacos will be soggy on the bottoms). Blend well and scoop into the tacos (which should be “standing” in a lightly greased casserole type dish). Then just sprinkle the cheese over the top and bake. I think I did my at 375 degrees for about 10 minutes. SO EASY! Top with whatever you’d like 🙂 DELISH!!!!

My husband LOVED these and I definitely see them popping up in our home regularly. I think they are also perfect for having company because tacos tend to be a crowd pleaser – even with picky eaters! Let me know how they came out for you or how to tweaked the recipe! Also, if you have any questions feel free to ask! Love you all!

Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

  2. I know I’m a few years late with this, but just seen it on a a Facebook post. Wondering if works wih the new stand up crunchy shells you can buy.

    • Hi Kay! The ones that you make yourself (in recipe) come out perfect. It ends up being semi soft and semi hard, kind of like a burrito taco lol. It is delicious. The store bought probably won’t be the same, but I’m sure they would work 🙂 hope this helps – let me know how it works for you!

    • Try it with making the shells this way…so good! Like she said, a nice soft but still a little crunchy shell. We make these tacos all the time. And I’m actually trying with corn tortillas tonight.

  3. These are great! The first time I made these was last year sometime and my husband loved them! He requests them all the time 🙂 and I’m actually making them tonight! 🙂 gonna try with corn tortillas this time though, so we’ll see which we prefer but I’m sure either is still yummy! thanks for sharing!

    • Hi Kate,

I am not sure, I have never tried to half it before. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work though. I make this for my husband and I and we always have leftovers that he usually eats the next day 😄 let me know how it comes out!

  4. I just put soft taco shells in a casserole dish, filled with refried beans, added taco meat and cheese. Did several hours before dinner so I covered it and put it in the fridge come dinner time, cooked it and it still turned out great! 🙂
Next time I’ll try it with the tomato sauce 🙂

    • Hello Jennifer,

That is a difficult question to answer because every family is different and if your kiddos are teens they will eat a lot more than children. I would say that if you are unsure, maybe having a salad as a side dish would be helpful? Thanks 😊

      • I haven’t made this in a while (shame on me ☺️) but I think it makes around 7-8 tacos, depending on how full you stuff them

  6. Did You Preheat The Oven Before You Hung The Tortillas On The Oven Rock To Harden Or You Put Them on And Then started to heat oven.

  7. how much tomato sauce is needed? I have a pre made sauce that I will use and not a can. Thanks so much. Looking forward to enjoying these tonight!

  9. I don’t see where it tells how to make the shells or the type of shells to use, I looked at past posts and one spoke of use shells in recipe vs store bought….please elaborate thanks

    • Mine did too. But I kept an eye on them and when they started to puff, I used tongs to pat down the puffs. It also helped shape them into perfect taco shape!

  10. When you are talking about the flowered shells, can you use a whole wheat wrap? Will they get crispy ? I have never responded on this, so I hope I’m doing it right lol

  11. Our family loves this recipe! Instead of doing the taco shells, I do burritos. I stuff them in tortillas, fold them, place them in a dish. Top with the remaining stuffing, store bought enchilada sauce, and cheese! Thanks for sharing for our family to enjoy!!
